A Very Positive Meeting: Police Commissioner Visits Enterprise House

BILL LONGMORE, elected Police Commissioner in November, visited Bishop’s Castle on Monday (11 Feb). Mr Longmore lives ‘just along the road’,at Hanwood.

He was accompanied by his Deputy, Barry Sheldon, who is from Telford. They visited Enterprise House to explore the possibilities of moving the Police presence from the Police Station into Enterprise House.

‘There is a remarkable and positive change,’ said Peter Phillips, Chairman of Enterprise S W Shropshire. ’The old police authority treated us with some disdain and indeed refused to come over and discuss the matter, despite it being of great importance to the communities of S W Shropshire.  Clearly Bill is very ‘hands on’ and it’s great to have someone so local in place !’

Charlotte Barnes, Bishops Castle’s Shropshire Councillor, explained that the Enterprise House proposal would be a huge improvement in the Police presence locally.

‘’The Police Station is seldom open to the public. Anyone going there can only use the outside phone, through to the Police switchboard. Enterprise House, on the other hand, is open five and a half days a week including 2 evenings. The well-liked staff would provide a human contact for help and advice, and, of course, there is office accommodation available. The Board of Enterprise SW includes all the local councils plus independent members, businessmen, etc., and they are unanimously in favour of the move. I hope this recent meeting has been the first step along that path.’

The running costs of the existing police station, which is a modern building, are £8500. It is officially designated as Unstaffed.
